Archive portfolio When I taught in a comprehensive school , I acquired a nickname. The name was ‘Chippy,’ ‘Chippy Minton’ It came from a character in a childrens' tv programme called ‘Trumpton’. Chippy Minton was a carpenter with a wife and two children, only one of whom ever featured.
It was a two edged sword for a while. children used to shout ‘Chippy’ at me and to be frank it made me angry - I allowed myself to be wound up by their provocations. But I began to see another side to it, in which the nickname contained a benign recognition. Such possibility had been there all the time. The Trumpton series portrayed a world in which there were no insurmountable disasters, life was a matter of overcoming with good grace, humour, determination and good intentions. Chippy Minton was a decent man, a craftsman, even tempered, happy in his work. He even had a song.
